FRENZ UNITED – LEADERSHIP & TEAMBUILDING CAMP

by Dib Sharif

CommanderFrenz United Football Academy’s Education Division’s trainer, Commander Sharif strongly feels that Team-building exercises can be a powerful way to unite a group, develop strengths, and address weaknesses – but only if the exercises are planned and carried out strategically. In other words, there has to be a real purpose behind our decision to do the exercise – for example, improving the team’s problem-solving or creativity skills.

Spend time thinking about our team’s current strengths and weaknesses (regardless if they are the players, the technical team, or even the whole Academy’s workforce. Lets ask ourselves these questions to identify the root of any problems:

  1. Are there conflicts between certain people that are  creating divisions within the team?
  2. Do team members need to get to know one another?
  3. Do some members focus on their own success, and harm the team and Academy’s integrity as a result?
  4. Does poor communication slow the team’s progress?
  5. Do people need to learn how to work together, instead of individually?
  6. Are some members resistant to change, and does this affect the team’s or the Academy’s ability to move forward?
  7. Do members of the team need a boost to their morale?

Team building  (which is correctly spelled with two words)refers to a wide range of activities, presented to businesses, schools, sports teams, religious or nonprofit organizations designed for improving team performance. Team building is pursued via a variety of practices, and can range from simple bonding exercises to complex simulations and multi-day team building retreats designed to develop a team (including group assessment and group-dynamic games), usually falling somewhere in between.

Once you’ve identified the causes of your team’s issues, you can plan exercises that will address these problems. This will help your team to derive real benefit from the event – and feel that it was worth their while.

Team building can also be seen in day-to-day operations of an organization and team dynamic can be improved through successful leadership. Team building is said to have benefits of self-development, positive communication, leadership skills and the ability to work closely together as a team to solve problems.

Work environments tend to focus on individuals and personal goals, with reward & recognition singling out the achievements of individual employees. Team building can also refer to the process of selecting or creating a team from scratch.

My Two Cents Worth  – MOST IMPORTANTLY, I personally feel that team building outdoor trips ARE PLANNED NOT FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING A NICE DAY OUT FOR LEISURE under company’s expense, because at the end of it all, whatever we do, reflect back on us! If we expect others to be good, we must be better.  If we expect others to be hard-working, we must equally practice what we preach……

Frenz UnitedFUFA boys had their very first Leadership and Team Building outing from 22 – 25 October 2013 at Nur Laman Bestari Eco Resort and though they seemed reluctant and ‘dis-engaged’ initially, but Facilitator PakLong’s approaches, methodology and excellent communication skills captured their minds and attention with great success!  It was indeed an enjoyable event and most of them felt they learned something new and valuable from the outing.
