Do I have the strength to be happy? I read an article, where a group of researches identified 6 core virtues, and 24 character strengths across generations and cultures makes up the strengths in order to be happy. Virtues like Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance and Transendence are observable characteristics that are valued over time and lead one to achieve excellence.
For instance, Oprah Winfrey highlights her strengths of kindness and social intelligence through her television programmes which exhibit her virtue of Humanity.
Whilst Mother Teresa demonstrated great acts of mercy, modesty and self-control. She was an excellent model of the Virtue of Temperance, including strengths of Forgiveness and Prudence.
Character strengths reflect the dimensions of one’s character. Strengths are exhibited through thoughts, feelings and actions which we develop and controll.
So what do I need to do to be happy? Again, the researches found out that the following strengths were highly correlated to high levels of positive emotion and life satisfaction :-
- Capacity to love and be loved
True in a way, the above and other significant “internal strengths” allowed me to demonstrate the real me in many various aspects of my life both personally and professionally. I get drained out tremendously, but on the contrary, I feel very inspired and invigorated.
Well, after reading a few articles, I find that the level of happiness actually depends pretty much on how I wish to express myself and react towards my determination(s). Will power. If there is a will, anything is possible. Mind power. As its all in the mind. Insha’allah.
However, with the existence of all the elements described above, hopefully the happiness I’ve always dreamed of shall rocket its way to greater heights. Wallahualam.
